Rev.Dr.Oommen George

A sound with a difference.’

Our new vicar from May 1st 2014 is Rev. Dr. Oommen George a versatile personality with ‘special gifts’ people who know him happily testify without hesitation and which he humbly denies without hesitation too!. Whatever the truth is, he sure seems to have a loud voice – sooth to the meek, amicable to the layman, thunder to the miscreant. The Ascension church will have to get used to this new sound.

His Punnakkad Malayil family together with his mother Rachael’s  Mallappally Panavelil family has a big list of Ministerial donors served and serving in the Madhya Kerala Diocese to their credits. His father is Mr. K.C. George a catechist. Achan, born on July 21st, 1956 in Kannanthanam, Maramon, received his primary educations from Kottanadu  & Idinjillam Govt schools, S.C.S  Thiruvalla and M.G.M Pampady. Pre-degree he did at the C.M.S College, Kottayam and B.A in Mysore University. In-between he managed to procure a Diploma in Eng from HIET Chennnai; from K.U.T.S Kannammoola B.T.H and B.D. He got his D. Min from McComic Theological Seminary, Chicago. May be it was that God was moulding him carefully that his had Bishops surrounding him all the time. Bp. Jacob baptized him, Bp. John confirmed his faith, Bp. Mani ordained him, Bp. Joseph solemnized his marriage, Bp. Samuel guided the studies, Bp Sam Mathew remains a great patron and Depty. Moderator Bp Oommen a close colleague. Br. Dr. Dinakaran was another influence. Achan’s wife is Aleyamma (Kochumol) is from Memadathil Karackal (Mammood Kochuparabil) family. They have three daughters Diana, Lida and Leena. His sister Kunjumol is married to Bp. T.C. Cherian of the St. Thomas Evangelical Church of India and the other kin Rev. Jacob George is training the Presbyterian ministers in Sudan, Africa.

As early from his younger years he was proving he was a born leader. From age 21 he is a member of the Executive Committee in our diocese. May be it was his this enthusiasm that attracted and interested Bishop M.C. Mani to send him to the Summer school of Evangelism  in S.I.B.S in Bangarapetta, Andhra, where he recognized his ‘calling’.

He has held several key posts in the past years as Parkal Mission Convener, Cherthala Mission Convener, Asst. Mission Director and Mission Board Secretary. Currently he is Synod member & in Synod Mission and Evangelism Committee. He is the Pastoral Board Secretary and Vice President of the Almaya Fellowship.

His favorite personalities in the Bible are John the Baptist and Peter the doubting disciple.  His manifesto – ‘Spread the Gospel & Help the poor’. For the past 22 yrs while ministering at Mundathanam, Njaliyakuzhy-Nalunnakkal, Mavelikkara, Chicago, Mammood, Nedungadappally and Mooledam C.S.I churches he tried his best to fulfill this. But what he always silently chant in his heart He must become greater; I must become less”; is his actual strength – he loud meekly, proudly.

With his taking charge the church attendance has already gone up and is on the rise. Already the new vicar has set apart all the Fridays of the year for ‘Fasting prayers’. A ‘new’ revival seems to be under way. Yes. Ascension church is waiting to see what this 21st century ‘George the Baptist’ has in store for them.
